About Bit Phoenix Software

Who are we?

We are a small game development group. We don’t do it for profit currently, just for fun. Our current game is The Peacenet, an Unreal Engine 4 hacking game inspired by some old Tom Scott skits, Hacknet, and ShiftOS.

Our team is small, consisting of @AlkalineThunder, @TheEdge, @AShifter, @FDDTheLucario, @Inkydink, and a few others. Both our development team and staff team are extremely friendly, and everyone is welcomed here. Feel free to say “hello!”

What is our history?

Our roots go all the way back to 2014 in a game developed by Philip Adams called ShiftOS (with the original ShiftOS forums still archived by @AlkalineThunder and the remains of the old community.)

During the development of 0.0.8, Phil handed it over to the community and the ShiftOS development team was formed. This team consisted of a few members still present in the community, and soon was lead by @AlkalineThunder (then known as TheUltimateHacker, or simply Michael.)

Throughout June 2015 to August 2017, Michael would write several ShiftOS rewrites that would somewhat hold the community together, however would always fail months into development. In August 2017, Michael changed his online identity to “Alkaline Thunder,” and started Watercolor Games.

Throughout the next few months, Michael would build a team and a community around WG’s first game, The Peacenet, and a year later would move to change the name of WG to “Bit Phoenix Software” to better reflect the team’s history.

What’s a “Bit Phoenix”?

In Greek mythology, a phoenix is a long-lived bird that attains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor.

In computer science, a bit is a binary digit - a number that can only be 0 or 1, off or on.

When thinking of the new name for Watercolor, @AlkalineThunder saw the Phoenix as a representation of the team’s history as the ShiftOS dev team - falling into general obscurity in August of 2017 and arising once again as Watercolor.

He also thought about how the team primarily focuses on programming, and came up with multiple ideas for the new name - such as:

  • Code Phoenix
  • Binary Phoenix
  • Byte Phoenix
  • Bit Phoenix

When proposing them to the community, the last one stuck the most - and became the new name. It is stylized as a C++ static function call, passing the string “software” to the phoenix function in the bit class, therefore reading bit:phoenix("software");, to reflect the team’s heavy use of C++ in Unreal Engine.

About this community

Do I need to know how to program to join?

Absolutely not! Not everyone can code and we understand that. Just because you can’t code or don’t know C++, doesn’t mean you won’t be able to find a spot in this community. In fact, we are willing to even help people learn code - so if you have a question, feel free to ask.

Can I share my own games here?

Sure, but don’t be obnoxious. We have a category specific to posting your own games and getting feedback. Just know that negative feedback is a possibility, so do be prepared for constructive and/or destructive criticism. (However, there IS a difference between negative feedback and insulting someone, so we’ll do our best to make sure that doesn’t happen.)

Can I upload my game here?

Absolutely not. We are NOT a game distribution platform and we don’t even host our own builds on this site. For a great distribution platform, we recommend itch.io. They offer completely free access and the ability to post builds up to 750mb in size, are free and open-source, and are very easy to use.

This website is meant only for discussion, our server does not have enough space to hold a bunch of people’s games. You can only upload images to this server.

Can I make site suggestions?

Absolutely! We are definitely open to feedback. No one gets everything right the first time. If you have a suggestion for the website/community, or even one of our games, feel free to post about it.

Are there other places I can interact with the community?

Of course! We have both a Gitter chat and a Discord server. There is also The Peacenet’s YouTube channel where development updates are somewhat frequently posted, and (most of the time) @AlkalineThunder does live coding streams each month.
